This is the senior-level of the Department Support Assistant job family, involving highly responsible general office or processing work (or a combination thereof) that requires a high degree of initiative, independence and originality in performing assigned tasks. Typically, the work involves multi-step processing where regulatory compliance is an issue and multiple options must be identified and considered.
Work requires a thorough knowledge of general office practices, organizational structure and specialized knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices applicable to the assigned work unit. An incumbent may also execute non-routine assignments or special projects that require understanding of the linkages between multiple systems, operations and processes. Only sensitive or unprecedented issues are referred to higher-level management for resolution.
Work differs from the Department Support Assistant II in that jobs involve more significant consequence of error, additional complexity and variety of guidelines to be interpreted and applied, exposure to more substantive problems, and greater automony allowed in adapting applicable precedents and existing procedures to unusual situations. Processing operations, in addition to those described at the II level, may include auditing, reconciling, verifying, issuing, balancing and entry-level analysis. Some positions may have responsibility for functional guidance in training and assisting less experienced employees. Use of PC or other automated systems involves more complex functionality, and work may be accomplished using proprietary applications, spreadsheet, database, presentation, graphics and/or project management software.
