Job Summary:

Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) are self-directed, advanced practitioners, whose primary roles include expert clinician, facilitator of learning, consultant, researcher, change agent, mentor, role model and leader. APNs are responsible for the development and/or application of standards and evidenced-based practice to enhance the quality of care given by nursing to patients and families. APNs practice serves to translate clinical expertise into holistic nursing care by impacting three spheres of influence: patients, nurses/nursing practice, and organizations/systems. APNs possess characteristics that are crucial to building a healthcare system that is evidenced based, patient centered, outcome effective, safe, ethical, interdisciplinary and cost effective. These characteristics include utilization of clinical judgment, advocacy and moral agent, collaboration, caring practices, systems thinking, responses to diversity, facilitation of learning, and clinical inquiry. Professionalism, ethical conduct and citizenship are modeled at all times.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide advanced, professional care as a physician extender to patients utilizing evidence based practice.

  • Patient management: daily rounds, updating and performing H&P's, evaluation of treatment plans, communication of patient needs to MD, prescribing and discharge facilitation.

  • Education: instruction for unit and hospital based programs, clinical staff resource, patient education, and MD updating.

  • Clinic: See patients as an extender of the MD in the clinic setting both pre and post operatively.



  • Masters of Science degree in Nursing (MSN)


  • Demonstrated competence in nursing specialty with minimum of 3 years experience as an RN in practicing specialty


  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Tennessee.

  • Licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) in the state of Tennessee

  • National certification in a specialty, such as ACNP, ANP, CCNS, FNP

  • BLS certification

  • ACLS certification
