INTERN-SURGICAL FIRST ASSIST (Orthopedic Surgery) PRN - Variable Shifts (P000087972)


Job Summary :

The Surgical First Assistant is responsible for assisting the physician throughout the intra-operative phase, as well as contributing to the delivery of quality patient care by working with other surgical team members during the preoperative and immediate postoperative phases.

Essential Duties :

  • Provides quality, effective patient care through skilled assistance with surgical interventions.

  • Prepares and knows the equipment and supplies used for the surgical procedure.

  • Prepares the patient for surgery.

  • Provides skilled assistance to the surgeon in terms of both manual dexterity and skill with instruments.

  • Assist the surgeon in utilizing techniques to provide hemostasis during the procedure.

  • Provides assistance in the application of drainage systems.

  • Assists with wound closure.

  • Appropriately selects and applies wound dressing.

  • Demonstrates ability to follow through in emergency situations.

  • Communicates accurate information in a timely manner concerning patient condition or need of physician/other health care professional.


Education :

  • High school diploma or graduate equivalent diploma (GED) required.

  • Certified Surgical First Assistant; OR

  • College degree in health related field with five years of first assisting experience.

Experience :

  • One year previous experience in first assisting a surgeon.

License/Certification :

  • American Heart Association (AHA) BCLS certified required.

  • State Physician Quality Verification Organization.

  • Credentialing privileges through the medical staff.
