GENERAL SUMMARY:

Provides leadership,

accountability, and direction for House Supervisor services for Mercy Medical

Center-Des Moines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Is a member of the All Management Team, MercyTeam and Nursing Management Council; attends and participates in meetings asscheduled and pertinent.

  • Operational responsibilities include budgeting,strategic planning, interdepartmental and intradepartmental coordination offunctions to facilitate patient care management, and integration andachievement of organizational goals.

  • Facilitates efficient operation of hospitalactivities in the absence of hospital Administration.

  • Supervises and coordinates hospital activitiesfor assigned shift. Shiftresponsibilities include interdepartmental rounds; facilitation ofinterdepartmental communication; coordination of appropriate patient placementand bed utilization with Patient Flow Department; crisis response; policyresource and interpretation; response to customer service issues (e.g. PatientAdvocate, Medical Staff, Employee Health, Infection Prevention); consultation,collaboration, and communication with Administrator-on-call and appropriateothers as indicated, (e.g. Public Relations).

  • Acts as a role model and change agent byinitiating and accepting changes for improved patient care and operations.

  • Leads House Supervisor use of technology andintegration into work flow.

  • Leads and promotes evidence-based practice andresearch among hospital leaders and staff.

  • Provides House Supervisor coverage based ondepartment needs. When serving in aHouse Supervisor role, will perform patient care duties using safe patienthandling techniques.

  • Departmental responsibilities includerecruitment, orientation, ongoing staff development, scheduling, communication,and performance evaluation.

  • Develops an annual operational plan (includingscope of service) integrated with Mercy's strategic plan and relateddepartments' operational plans in order to efficiently provide services;considers specific needs of Main Campus and Mercy West Lakes.

  • Develops, implements and periodically reviewsall policies and procedures that guide and support assigned and administrativeservices. These include but are not limited to JC requirements, federal andstate regulatory standards, etc.

  • Develops and maintains departmental staffingplan for direct reports, detailing appropriate employee classifications andqualifications consistent with the department's operational plan, projectedvolumes, patient acuity, and other relevant indicators. Participates in human resource planning byproviding recommendations for staffing, proactive recruitment, and long-termneeds. Assures compliance with staffingplan.

  • Continuously assesses and improves thedepartment's performance based on, but not limited to, the department's qualityplan measures and patient/employee satisfaction data.

  • Supervises assigned management staff. Provides necessary education, orientation,and support to management team.

  • Knowledge of the patient care delivery process,coordination of care, and relevant federal, state, payer regulations regardingeligibility for services, medical necessity, and appropriateness of services.

  • Responds to patient, family, physician, andstaff needs in various capacities (e.g. Patient Advocate, Infection Prevention,Employee Health Services).

  • Facilitates interdepartmental communication withPatient Flow Department regarding patient placement and transfers to maximizeefficient bed utilization.

  • Maintains open and positive communication withstaff, physicians, administrators and other hospital leaders/departments.

  • Monitors patient flow daily and facilitatespatient flow team with Patient Flow Department and leads census alerts asissues arise.

  • Accepts and performs additional Administrativeassignments such as Task Force participation related to topics pertinent to theHouse Supervisor role and responsibilities.

  • Assists in compliance with Advance Directivesand/or Organ Donation directives.

  • Serves as a resource to staff with End-of-Lifeconcerns and protocols (e.g. Tissue and Organ Donation, Medical Examiner cases,Autopsy requests and consents).

  • Serves as a staff resource to facilitateappropriate contacts for clinical specialty needs (e.g. Pain Management, WoundCare).

  • Supports and abides by all Mercy policies,including safety policies and practices.

  • Performs House Supervisor role at Main and WestLakes.

Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Current state licensure as an R.N.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree required, or actively in pursuit of BSN degree (actively accepted into a BSN Program and/or currently enrolled). Expected to take at least six credits per year at the CNO’s discretion for exception.

  • Minimum of 5 years clinical experience and 5 years supervisory experience.

  • Effective organizational and prioritization skills.

  • Ability to communicate professionally and objectively, both verbal and written.

  • Performs other responsibilities as requested by Administrator-on-call.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.

Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained by the end of the orientation period (approximately six (6) weeks
