Cares for patients during Cardiac Cath Lab procedures

using the nursing process. Such procedures include, but are not limited to,

coronary angiography, PTCA, stents, pediatric and adult heart catheterizations,

peripheral PTA, EPS, Ablation, PPM, ICD, Valvuloplasty and laser procedures.


  • Assists physician in continuous assessment, planning, implementation andevaluation of care of patients of diverse ages during procedures in CardiacCath Lab. Administers medications, moderate sedation, IVs, CPR anddefibrillation, etc. as ordered during procedure.

  • Proficient with aseptic technique and assists physician with scrubbingduring and after procedure. Transports patients to and from the cath lab. May applymanual pressure to puncture site to obtain hemostasis following procedure.Maintains all aspects of patient safety.

  • Prepares appropriate forms to document all events during Cath Labprocedures for the patient's medical record, Cath Lab records and statistics.Maintains all aspects of patient confidentiality. Assists in quality control inCath Lab.

  • Completes annual competencies and educational requirements.

  • Maintains readiness of equipment in procedure rooms. Acquires suppliesneeded for procedures and passes to physician or assistant maintaining steriletechnique. Assists in maintaining inventory control.

  • Performs patient and family education of cath lab procedures anddocuments on patient medical record.

  • Obtains nursing histories, consent forms, and lab data on outpatientsprior to procedure.

  • Transports patients to and from procedure rooms. May apply manualpressure to puncture site(s) to obtain hemostasis.

  • Sets up trays for procedures using aseptic techniques.

  • Prepares skin and drapes patient for procedure using aseptic technique.


  • Cross-trains in other job functions as needed.

  • Participates on committees as assigned.

  • Serves as resource/coach/preceptor in orientation of new staff.

  • Possession of a current license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Stateof Iowa

  • A minimum of 2 years critical care nursing experience.

  • Proof ofcompletion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served withinthree (3) months of hire.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified orobtained by the end of the orientationperiod (approximately six (6) weeks).

  • ACLS preferred -required within 2 years in cath lab.
