RN Clinical Educator -5N Ortho Trauma- Mercy Medical Center - FT 0.9 (Days)



The RN-Educator Clinical is an RN who provides unit-based leadership to the patient care team through specialized educational programming and mentorship. The CRN is an expert practice nurse and serves as a professional role model to others for patients of diverse ages. Acts as a change agent, supporting evidence-based practice and research.

Essential components include conducting needs assessments, objective development, orientation planning, competency validation of skills, maintaining a current educational program for staff that includes emergent knowledge and skill mastery, safe clinical practice, and adherence to the American Nurses Association Scope and Standards of Practice. Engages nurses in lifelong learning to develop and maintain their competencies, advance their professional nursing practice, and facilitate their achievement of academic and practice career goals.

Current knowledge of established standards and processes (quality management), requirements by accrediting and regulatory agencies, and effective educational strategies in mentoring and coaching for effective personalized patient-centered, family-focused outcomes is expected. Works independently with limited direct supervision using the Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, nursing standards, and professional judgment. Works rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.


  • Develops educational plans and learning resources. Provides orientation/education for staff, students, and other hospitals and community organizations as requested and in accordance with adult learning principles.

  • Assess learning needs, competencies, strengths, and opportunities to improve critical thinking, interpersonal, and technical skills.

  • Provide frequent feedback in order to build knowledge and levels of competency in clinical practice

  • Facilitate evidence-based practice by bringing nursing research to the point of care.

  • Advise, collaborate, translate, integrate, and evaluate research that is in the literature and/or in progress within the organization through practice, education, and reflective discussion with staff.

  • Provides nursing care to patients; includes assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating the patient's care plan in coordination with the physician.

  • Observes and evaluates healthcare members (i.e. Licensed Practical Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, etc.) with patients.

  • Utilizes hospital information systems to process orders/data and retrieve patient information.

  • Maintains knowledge of equipment set-up, maintenance and use (i.e., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, drainage devices).

  • Initiates emergency support measures (i.e., cardiopulmonary resuscitation, protecting patient from injury).


  • Assists with patient care duties/tasks (i.e., emptying drainage devices, ambulating, and hygiene) while practicing safe patient handling techniques.

  • Assists with clerical duties (i.e., maintenance of chart, patient record, answering phones and call lights).

  • Maintains patient care supplies, equipment, and environment.

  • Effectively assumes job responsibilities of ancillary support during absence.



  • Possession of a current or compact state license as a registered nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa.

  • Bachelor degree in nursing or actively in pursuit of BSN degree (accepted into a BSN Program and/or currently enrolled) required. Expected to take at least six credits per year at Unit Director’s discretion for exception. Master’s degree in nursing is preferred.

  • Minimum of three years Registered Nurse experience.

  • Minimum of three years current experience in the area of practice.

  • Specialty certification within one year of promotion.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.

  • BLS certified within six (6) weeks of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
