Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse is responsible to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for assigned patients. The Registered Nurse demonstrates competency in nursing practice as outlined in the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act. The Registered Nurse must be trained to provide care for patients in their primary department.

Cares for patients with a variety of acute to critical medical/surgical problems ranging from infants to geriatrics at various developmental levels. Patients are from both traditional and nontraditional family structures with a variety of sociocultural and educational backgrounds.

Essential Duties:

  • Utilizes critical thinking and the nursing process to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and provide nursing care of acutely ill and critical patients within the framework of their licensure and established hospital guidelines including appropriate documentation.

  • Manages critical patient care within the parameters of physician orders or emergently in the absence of a physician including but not limited to:

  • Assessment, nursing diagnosis, intervention, planning, evaluating and documenting care of the critically ill patient requiring intensive care and monitoring.

  • Infusion/titration therapy of critical care drugs including hemodynamic and thrombolytic medication administration and conscious sedation.

  • Coronary care, monitoring, and management of arrhythmias.

  • Ventilator support and monitoring.

  • Hemodynamic and neurodynamic monitoring, management, and supportive care.

  • Neurological patient care monitoring.

  • Surgical patient care and monitoring.

  • Care and monitoring of dialysis patient (CRRT).

  • Leads the healthcare team in effective utilization of resources to accomplish goals of the unit and deliver excellent patient care. Provides guidance to and delegates tasks appropriately to Monitor Techs, Nursing Unit Techs, Patient Care Assistants, LPN’s and LPN-C’s in Critical Care.

Provider

  • Utilizes the nursing process to assess and prioritize patient needs.

  • Formulates, implements and evaluates the patient’s plan of care. Adjusts plan of care in consultation with the Charge nurse as appropriate and implements plan.

  • Uses basic communication skills to provide care to assigned patients/ families. Relays pertinent information through appropriate documentation and referral to other health care team members such as medicine, dietary and support staff. Initiates discharge planning working in collaboration with the appropriate staff.

  • Initiates appropriate nursing action in crisis or emergency situations.

  • Carries out physician orders.

  • Provides continuity of care to meet the patient’s changing needs.

  • Records information on the patient record in accordance with charting guidelines.

  • Utilizes time management principles and techniques.

Hours: 6p-6a/6a-6p

Qualifications

Education

  • Knowledge of nursing theory and practice acquired through completion of an accredited school of nursing to be eligible for licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Nebraska.

Will complete Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within five years of hire from an accredited nursing program (if an ADN or Diploma RN)

License & Certification

Current Nebraska license as a Registered Nurse.

BLS required. ACLS certification required within six months of hire, PALS certification required within one year of hire. Trauma Nurse Core Care certification preferred within one year.

After 2 years of employment, strongly encouraged to pursue certification in specialty area.

Experience

  • Approximately one year on-the-job experience to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of the hospital, unit, departmental procedures and policies.

Skills

  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to gather and exchange information with physicians, patient, family, visitors and other hospital personnel in highly stressful situation.

  • Analytical skills necessary to develop and implement effective nursing care and complex problem-solving measures for patient’s physical, psychosocial and spiritual well being.
