Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the clinical manager, assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the care of all assigned patients. Coordinates, supervises, directs and educates others providing care in a manner consistent with the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act and in support of the mission of CHI Health St. Francis. Cares for older adolescent, adult and geriatric patients with a variety of medical/surgical problems at various developmental levels. Patients are from both traditional and nontraditional family structures with a variety of sociocultural and educational backgrounds.

Essential Duties:

  • Assigns, coordinates and/or directs care given by other nursing staff as required. Identifies when other unit personnel need assistance and offers help. Collaborates with patient, family and interdisciplinary team to plan patient care. Problem solves with team to prevent adverse patient outcomes.

  • Performs procedures and treatments while using equipment according to nursing service policies and procedures, demonstrates unit based competencies and utilizes evidence based teaching methods.

  • Utilizes the nursing process to assess and prioritize patient needs.

  • Formulates, implements and evaluates the patient’s plan of care. Adjusts plan of care in consultation with the Charge nurse as appropriate and implements plan.

  • Uses basic communication skills to provide care to assigned patients/ families. Relays pertinent information through appropriate documentation and referral to other health care team members such as medicine, dietary and support staff. Initiates discharge planning working in collaboration with the appropriate staff.

  • Initiates appropriate nursing action in crisis or emergency situations.

  • Carries out physician orders.

  • Provides continuity of care to meet the patient’s changing needs.

  • Records information on the patient record in accordance with charting guidelines.

  • Utilizes time management principles and techniques.

Qualifications

Education

Knowledge of nursing theory and practice acquired through completion of an accredited school of nursing to be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse

Will complete Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within five years of hire from an accredited nursing program (if an ADN or Diploma RN)

Licensure and Certification

  • Current Nebraska license as a Registered Nurse.

  • Current certification in Basic Life Support.

  • After 2 years of employment, strongly encouraged to pursue certification in specialty area.

Experience

  • Approximately six month’s on-the-job experience to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of hospital, unit, departmental procedures and policies to meet quality and quantity standards.

Skills

Interpersonal skills necessary to gather and exchange information with physicians, patient, family, visitors and other hospital personnel. Ability to work with multiple departments to continually improve customer service and to promote a person-centered, healing environment. Consistently addresses interpersonal issues with coworkers in a positive direct manner.

Analytical skills necessary to develop and implement effective nursing care and problem-solving measures for patient's physical, psychosocial and spiritual well-being
