Job Summary:

Under the direction of a registered nurse, performs a variety of duties in an operating room to assist the surgical team. Plans and implements care for patients with a variety of surgical problems. These patients may range in age from neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult or geriatric at various developmental levels. Patients are from both traditional and non-traditional family structures with a variety of sociocultural and educational backgrounds.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists surgical team during operative procedure by setting up instrument tables, passing appropriate instruments to surgeons, positioning patients on surgery table and so forth.

  • Checks surgical equipment to assure that it is in proper working condition for safe use during the patients' operative care.

  • Selects and prepares the surgical supplies and equipment for operations in accordance with pre-determined lists and surgeons' established preferences and requests. Sterilizes instruments in autoclave according to established procedures.

  • Prepares the operating room for surgery according to aseptic environment guidelines by checking cleanliness, moving in additional tables and carts and so forth. Sets up the room and sterile tables in adherence to surgeon preferences and departmental guidelines.

  • Changes into operative clothing, scrubs hands and arms, puts on sterile gown and gloves, and assists others in doing the same.

  • Greets patient, talks with patient to calm them, and otherwise assists circulating nurse to prepare the patient for surgery. Positions the patient in prescribed position for type of surgery to be performed.

  • Arranges sterile instrument placement for operation. Counts sponges, needles and instruments with circulator prior to surgery and before incision is closed.

  • Passes instruments, sponges, and sutures to surgeon and surgical assistants.

  • Prepares the operative area of the patient. Drapes sterile field. Maintains an aseptic environment by practicing sterile technique throughout the surgical procedure (e.g., reports contamination of sterile field to surgical team).




  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program

  • Certification in Surgical Technology

  • In lieu of attending and completing an accredited Surgical Technology program, must possess 15 years of experience as a Surgical Technologist.

  • BLS is required upon hire. (Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following: American Red Cross: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, American Safety and Health Institute: CPR, PRO, must say “Professional Level-with AED”, and American Heart Association: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.)

Working Conditions

Patient Care/Surgical environment. Routine and extended periods of standing are required. Manual dexterity required.
