Position Summary

Responsible

for performing specimen processing, storage and transport of laboratory

specimens. May assist nursing service in the patient care areas with order

entry, collection, and testing for patient specimens. Daily

coordination of section assignments to ensure efficient specimen collection and

processing if applicable. Training and continuing education of section

employees. Maintaining quality assurance records, and monitoring maintenance

records.

Qualifications

Education:

High

School Diploma/GED Required

Minimum Experience:

Two

(2) years of relevant work experience

PositionResponsibilities:

  1. Perform test order

entry and patient registration

  1. Processes, transports

and distributes blood and other samples for in-house testing and/or send out to

reference labs, and Ensures appropriate specimen storage

  1. Responsible for

responding to inquiries, and reference laboratories regarding test orders,

specimen requirements and reporting

  1. Assist in training

new employees and clinical personnel on specimen collection

  1. Performs routine

clerical duties and computer Functions associated with processing patient

samples and results

  1. Answers the phone,

Receives and disseminates verbal and written communications related to

laboratory services or personnel in a confidential manner

  1. Assists with data

collection for quality assurance

  1. Assist in the

accessioning of specimens, retrieves surgical pathology slides and blocks upon

request

  1. Attends all required

safety training programs, general safety, department/service safety, and

specific job related hazards

  1. Collaborates

effectively with lab co-workers to manage personal overtime for balanced

productivity. Willing to work other shifts as needed to meet laboratory's

objective to provide quality laboratory service and patient care

  1. Ability to recognize

and identify root cause of problems, choose appropriately among resolution

alternatives, and implement solutions

  1. Responsible for

inventory of supplies

  1. Attends departmental

meetings/ hospital continuing education and Participates in department and

hospital activities

  1. Ensures that all

outpatient requisitions include all required information (diagnosis, physician

signature, etc.)

  1. Adheres to all

regulatory requirements

  1. Performs

and documents routine maintenance on laboratory equipment

  1. Provides

technical assistance in the frozen and gross rooms

  1. Receives

and processes laboratory specimens

  1. Assists

with the accurate filling and retrieval of paraffin blocks and glass slides

  1. Coordinates

training and continuing education programs for section personnel ensuring

complete check-off and readiness of all employees to perform any assigned task,

with appropriate documentation according to section Standard Operating

Procedure

  1. Ensures

that all outpatient requisitions include all required information (diagnosis,

physician signature, etc.).

  1. Monitors

maintenance records and daily quality control ensuring all instrumentation and

Workstations are in good working order

  1. Maintains

inventory of supplies, notifying manager/assistant supervisor of needed

supplies to order

  1. Assists

manager/supervisor with problem solving and brainstorming to continue the

improving of the efficiency of the section
