Summary of Purpose

Assumes primary responsibility for coordinating and facilitating comprehensive care delivery in all clinical areas during a designated shift. Serves as in-house administration after business hours and on weekends/holidays. Assumes delegated nursing administrative responsibilities in the absence of the Director and/or Vice President. Supports a professional practice philosophy within a shared governance system that supports the hospital mission and nursing vision.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for the coordination and support of patient activity and safe practices in all clinical areas on the designated shift.

  2. Responsible for accepting and placing all admissions on the designated shift. All hospital EMTALA transfer requests are approved by the House Manager.

  3. Responsible for facilitating unit triaging during times of peak census. When high census or ICU contingency plans are imminent, coordinates decisions with Directors, Medical Director, Vice President, and Administrator on-call as appropriate.

  4. Supervises emergency situations, providing direction, support and assistance as necessary toward problem resolution.

  5. Coordinates daily staffing adjustments to maintain safe and effective care. Works with Department Director as necessary to resolve floating and assignment issues.

  6. Serves as a resource to physicians when issues arise. Answers staff questions regarding medical staff privileging when needed.

  7. Serves in a patient/family advocacy role when issues are identified.

  8. Responds to high risk situations, takes on-site action, and communicates with appropriate Director/designee or Administrator on-call in a timely manner.


Position Qualifications:


  • Bachelors degree required or academic plan to accomplish within 24 months required for House Managers accepting full- or part-time positions of 40 hours or greater every two weeks. This requirement was waived for initial incumbents to this position if applicable experience was present.

  • Graduation from a school of nursing acknowledged by the State of NE Department of Human Services, Division of Regulation Licensure.

  • BSN or MSN preferred.


  • Active NE (or multi-state compact) Registered Nurse license. Individual is responsible to maintain active license.

  • PALS certification.

  • CPR certification within 3 months.

  • ACLS certification within 6 months.

  • Certification in specialty area preferred.


  • Three years prior nursing experience in an acute care setting. Previous experience in a team leader capacity.

  • Supervisory or management experience preferred.


  • Must have knowledge of nursing management skills including leadership, information processing, conflict resolution, critical thinking, and decision making.

  • Must have knowledge and understanding of nursing process and interdisciplinary team approach to patient care.

  • Must possess current technical competence related to emergency medical procedures and clinical nursing skills performance.

  • Ability to see and hear in order to perform assessment duties.

  • Must possess interpersonal skills to effectively work with employees, physicians, visitors and guests in routine and difficult situations.

  • Ability to prioritize and organize work.
