Job Summary/Essential Duties:

  1. Performs infection surveillance activities to identify opportunities for improvement.

  2. Reports findings and recommendations to the appropriate committees, individuals or outside agencies as appropriate.

  3. Collaborates with Medical staff, Environment of Care, and Occupational Health staff in investigations, studies and other activities related to the improvement in infection prevention practices.

  4. Participates in, and is an integral part of a multi disciplinary process for handling infectious materials and waste.

  5. Collaborates with local and national regulatory agencies in response to community and national events such as bioterrorism, community outbreaks and natural disasters.

  6. Develops, maintains, and participates in environmental hazard surveillance to identify opportunities for improvement in infection prevention practices, including documentation and follow up of deficiencies, and recommend methods to economically remove or reduce hazards.

  7. Coordinates at least annually an infection prevention risk assessment pertinent to the assigned site or service, to identify vulnerabilities, and opportunities for improvement in existing Alegent Health facilities and programs; facilitates corrective action or recommends solutions as appropriate.

  8. Coordinates and performs the abstraction of clinical data/information pertinent to infection prevention surveillance programs utilizing standard data collection tools and definitions.

  9. Develops, promotes, and provides timely infection prevention education and training programs in collaboration with Human Resources; acts as a resource for, and facilitates department-specific education responsibilities.

  10. Participates in committee activities associated with infection prevention.

  11. Communicates with internal and external customers on matters related to infection prevention.

  12. Maintains appropriate records to meet regulatory requirements for the System Infection Prevention Program.

Four years in nursing or medical technology/laboratory; one year experience in Infection Control and Joint Commission accreditation processes is preferred. Familiarity with process improvement principles preferred.


Required: Completion of a Registered Nurse program in an accredited institution required.

Current RN licensure in the State of Nebraska or the State of Iowa is required. Nebraska and Iowa are compact states so you must be licensed in the state of residence.

Preferred: Current Certification in Infection Control (CIC) or realization within 4 years of hire.

Preferred : Bachelors degree in health care field. Masters in Nursing or Health Related Field


  • Strong emphasis on critical thinking and process improvement principles and strategies, or any comparable combination of these skills

  • Substantial understanding of Infection Prevention principles and practices, strong knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and professional standards.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and work successfully with all levels of staff.

  • Strong planning skills with the ability to manage and complete projects are required.

  • Facilitation skills are required

  • Must demonstrate personal traits of high level of motivation, team orientation, professionalism, trust and place a high value on treating others with dignity and respect
