Program Manager - Marketing



This job is responsible for managing marketing and communications activities for the assigned CHI Franciscan Health service line or hospital in support of strategic business objectives and in accordance with the standards of the profession. An incumbent develops and implements marketing strategies/tactics that may include advertising, media relations, collateral development, special events and special projects for the regional integrated healthcare delivery system. Work also includes working directly with service line/hospital leaders, physicians, managers and staff to provide guidance with respect to targeted communications and other services to assist them in achieving organizational objectives. As a member of the CHI-FH Marketing/Communications team, engages other team members appropriately in accomplishing assignments.

Requires knowledge of marketing principles and practices as applied to the health care industry in order to support assigned work units in their efforts to deploy strategies and resources to promote CHI-FH facilities, programs and services and facilitate a competitive advantage for the organization. An incumbent provides direction and creativity in determining innovative approaches and appropriate tactics, distribution channel(s) and communication vehicle(s) to best reach and engage identified target audiences.


Marketing and Promotion:

  • Develops and implements marketing and community relations plans to help CHI-FH service lines/hospitals to achieve established targets and goals; implements tactics to increase awareness, preference and utilization of assigned functional areas; meets regularly with leaders, physicians and staff of assigned functional areas to plan and implement marketing efforts and to keep them informed of status and outcomes.

  • Coordinates development of advertising/promotional campaigns; develops and oversees implementation of special and health-related promotional events; develops website and Internet-based promotional efforts; develops collateral and other promotional tools; plans service line/site-specific media and public relations efforts and arranges for media relations services to be provided by the department’s designated media relations manager; coordinates efforts designed to increase awareness for service line/hospital services among managers, staff, FMG physicians and other referral sources.

  • Partners with assigned service line/hospital Leaders to develop and implement communications support for function/site-specific initiatives designed to increase performance and satisfaction, engage staff and physicians and enhance overall operations.

  • Ensures work is performed in a timely manner; develops effective and cooperative relationships with leadership peers and others within the organization and medical community to implement strategic initiatives in support of organizational goals.

  • Keeps abreast of regulatory requirements, professional standards and competitive industry practices, as well as organizational initiatives/changes with potential to impact current operations; monitors impact on existing activities to maintain service levels and work quality.

Business Development:

  • Cultivates and maintains professional relationships with primary customers of assigned functional areas, including executives, medical directors, physicians, managers, staff, patients, vendors and external entities to foster opportunities for revenue enhancement, enhanced customer services and to positively impact business objectives.

Budget and Resource Administration:

  • Participates in the preparation and administration of the annual operating budget; exercises effective cost control to stay within budget; approves expenditures within defined scope of responsibility; identifies variances and develops action plan to address; keeps supervisor apprised of all issues with potential for budgetary impact; negotiates and manages agreements with vendors to ensure smooth operation and consistent return on investment.

Short- and Long-Term Planning:

  • Participates, as a member of the department management team, in short- and long-term planning activities, participates in developing/implementing projects to address current and future needs to support business objectives.

Performance Improvement/Quality:

  • Ensures effective communication of initiatives and programs impacting the entire organization to facilitate performance and process improvements in keeping with strategic objectives and regulatory requirements; advocates and provides direction for change management.

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of plans and tactics, including conducting return-on-investment measurements whenever possible; ensures quality and accuracy of materials produced and compliance with corporate graphic and other standards.

  • Participates in the development/updating of policies/procedures; implements/evaluates new/revised policies/ procedures to ensure consistency and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements; ensures internal guidelines are documented and understood.

Other Essential Duties:

  • May directly supervise one or two subordinate professional and/or administrative staff positions in accordance with established procedures; assigns and reviews work, provides on-the-job training as necessary; describes performance standards and evaluates employee performance; participates in performance management activities and resolves technical issues referred by subordinates as beyond their scope of authority.

Performs related duties as required.


Education/Work Experience Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in Marketing, Journalism, English, Communications, Public Relations or related field

  • Four years of progressively responsible related work experience that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge/abilities.

  • Work experience in a health care setting or an agency with health care clients is preferred.

  • Supervisory experience is preferred for some positions.
