GENERAL SUMMARY:

A

Respiratory Therapist performs patient assessment, evaluation for appropriate

therapy, administration of therapy, consultation with other health care

providers, diagnostic testing, implementation and troubleshooting of equipment

and monitoring of patient. These

services are provided as appropriate for patient age to include neonate,

infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric adult.

ESSENTIAL

FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs inhaledmedication therapy, arterial puncture, blood gas analysis, pulmonary functiontesting, chest physiotherapy, oxygen therapy, helium-oxygen therapy, carbondioxide-oxygen therapy, nitric oxide-oxygen therapy, CPAP therapy, BIPAPtherapy, bland aerosol therapy, PEP therapy, high-frequency oscillator therapy,and ventilatory support modalities as ordered by physician.

  • Participates incardiopulmonary resuscitation, assists or performs intubation, managesartificial airway, and transport of patients requiring ventilatory support.

  • Assembles,manipulates, and troubleshoots Respiratory Care equipment including mechanicalventilators, pulse oximeters, capnometers, aerosol generators, medical gasdelivery systems, humidification systems, and mechanical percussors.

  • Interpretsdiagnostic results for feasibility and reports results, to include blood orother body fluid analysis by blood gas analyzer and co-oximeter, pulmonaryfunction screening, pulmonary mechanics studies, end-tidal C02, and pulseoximetry.

  • Performs recordkeeping, billing and medical record documentation functions.

  • Provides patientinstruction in the use of Respiratory Care devices and procedures.

Qualifications

MINIMUM

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Certificate of completion from an accredited RespiratoryCare Program by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health EducationalPrograms (CAAHEP).

  • Credential bythe National Board for Respiratory Care as a Certified Respiratory Therapist. Forthose hired after July 1, 2017, must be credentialed by the National Board forRespiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist within six (6) months ofhire.

  • State of IowaRespiratory Care Practitioner license.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS for the Healthcare Providercertified or obtained within three (3) months of hire. Acceptable credentialing bodies andcertifications include American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuerand American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.

  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse trainingspecific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
