JOB SUMMARY:

Provides health care services utilizing a combination of strong magnetic field and high frequency sound waves to produce images for diagnosis or treatment. Coworker provides healthcare services, performing diagnostic ultrasound procedures to assist in diagnosis or treatment producing images (scans) for interpretation by or at the request of a licensed practitioner.

CORE COMPETENCIES & PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

  1. Patient Assessment:

Completes a comprehensive assessment on patients of all ages including patient screening and contraindications. Obtains pertinent medical history from patient by observation or with oral communication. Performs patient assessment to determine:

  1. Patient’s physical ability to undergo the imaging procedure as needed.b) What patient care is needed during the procedure

  2. If there are contraindications to performing the procedure as ordered.

  3. What modification of the procedure may be required by the age of the patient.

  4. What indication or symptoms patient has to determine what to scan for in Ultrasound.

  5. Documentation:

Utilizes patient clinical assessment and patient clinical history in making professional judgment that supports the plan of patient care and properly documents the patient assessment and clinical history. Exercises professional judgment in performance of services and maintains a demeanor complimentary to medical ethics. Capable of using EHR Documents pertinent medical history from patient on radiology request form. Completes appropriate forms correctly:

  1. Time Out

  2. Pregnancy Statement

  3. Medication Reconciliation

Fills out worksheets on all patients’ exams. Uses immobilizing devices as required by the patient’s age, condition or the procedure as determined by patient assessment. Using professional judgment:

  1. Performs the procedure as ordered with proper and appropriate indications for procedure.

  2. Modifies procedure as required through knowledge gained by patient assessment without compromising diagnostic or therapeutic outcome. Actively assist in meeting all department accrediting and licensing standards including:

  3. JCAHO.

  4. State Health Department.

  5. Any other state, local or federal agency as required.

  6. Communication:

Ensures that communication supports the plan of patient care.

Communicates clearly with patients of all ages, peers and others in order to complete the hospital/physician plan of patient care.

Notifies the patient’s attending physician or Radiologist of any patient issues that affect the plan of patient care as directed within the time frames identified in the Radiology Policy Manual.

  1. Notifies the nurse on the patient’s unit or the physician’s office nurse if the physician is not available.

  2. Procedures:

Provides appropriate patient care during the correct performance of radiologic procedures. Safely transports wheelchair, stretcher and ambulatory patients as needed. Documents technical factors on all procedures immediately upon completion of the procedure. Performs venipuncture under the supervision of a physician on patients of all ages.

Performs clerical tasks to support the patient plan of care.

Assist the Radiologist within the radiographers scope of practice as directed by the physician.

Performs sonographic procedures on patients of all ages properly, according to the Ultrasound Policy & Procedure Manual standards. Functions as lead technologist or team leader during the absence of Technical Supervisor.

  1. Plans job assignments, relating to needs of the department.

  2. Coordinates schedules and supervises technical exams to ensure quality diagnostic standards are maintained.

  3. Maintains departmental efficiency and cleanliness.

Demonstrates proper working knowledge of sterile techniques related to a sonographer’s need to assist Radiologist during invasive procedures.

Collects folders and pulls reports relating to Ultrasound exams to be performed and documents history.

Documents when sending for patients and sending patients back.

Collect Ultrasound films from laser printer and filing them in proper patient’s folder. Knowledge of the Kinetx Computer System and knows how to trouble-shoot when problems occur.Knowledge of Teleradiolography. Coordinates their work schedules as directed by the needs of department.

  1. Willing to work late if necessary.

  2. Willing to come to work early if needed.

  3. Willing to work on weekends and holidays as needed.

  4. Willing to take call.

Assists with Vascular Quality Improvement and updates each month.

Assists other sonographers when they have a problem with a procedure.

Assist student sonographers on scanning techniques.

Orders supplies each week. Reviews complete procedure to assure:

  1. All organs are identified as ordered.

  2. Procedure charges have been correctly made.

  3. Physician’s order corresponds with printed order on exam request.

  4. Education:

Provides education for students, patients, self and others appropriate for the age that is being served.

Provides clinical supervision for student Radiographers.

Participates in student clinical competency evaluation by completing:

  1. Weekly student evaluations.

  2. Evaluates student clinical competency by observing student clinical performance and documenting their competence.

Pursues educational self development in order to maintain ARDM certification or ARRT, if also a Technologist of a different modality, such as, CT Tech or Rad Tech. Maintains education requirements.

Completes mandatory in-services.

Maintains CPR certification according to Health Care Provider course standards by the American Heart Association.

Attends school faculty meetings or monthly department meetings.

Participates in continuous quality improvements activities. (CQI)

  1. Environment:

Maintains a safe environment for patients, self and others.

Ensure that all radiation safety standards are met for all age groups.

Documents patient pregnancy statements.

  1. Notifies attending physician immediately if patient is pregnant or suspects pregnancy before performing the procedure.

Modifies the procedure for pregnant patients as directed by physician using the Radiology Safety Manual Guidelines to include the use of:

  1. Lead shielding.

  2. Performing different or fewer images that still support the patient plan of care.

Avoid any mechanical, biological, radiation or electrical hazard and report potential hazards immediately.

  1. Minimizes patient radiation exposure by proper performance and avoiding repeat radiographs.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Preferred, but not required, graduate of program of Radiologic Technology accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) an approved Sonography/Vascular Ultrasound program that has been approved by (JRCERT); or a graduate of military program an accredited by JRCERT or a graduate of an accredited ultrasound training program.

Experience: Must be ARDMS registered within one (1) year of hire date, and must be registered in Vascular technology within two (2) years. The ARRT ( American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) for sonographer is an acceptable registry.

Physical Requirements: The physical activities involve balancing, climbing, crawling, grasping, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping and use of fingers and repetitive movements. An individual in this position may be required to carry or lift weight of up to fifty (50) pounds and push/pull one hundred/one hundred-fifty 100-150 pounds. The sensory and communicative activities required for this position include feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling and speaking. Individuals in this position could possibly be exposed to inside environmental conditions, blood borne pathogens and body fluids, chemical hazards, respiratory hazards and radiological hazards.

Skills: Certified in CPR according to Health Care Provider Course standards by the American Heart Association. Possess the ability to use complex imaging equipment and computers. Demonstrates good interpersonal skills and readily adapts to changing events in the radiographic environment. You must demonstrate proficiency in the operation of all diagnostic ultrasound equipment.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Be effective team member with Radiology, CT and MRI Departments.
