Position Summary

Utilizes knowledge of infection control and epidemiology to insure the clinical management of infection control activities at all health system locations. Ensures compliance with established standards for infection control and Maintains IC regulatory compliance. Responsible for the evaluation of hospitalized patients for the presence of nosocomial, communicable, and reportable infectious diseases and the investigation and resolution of possible outbreaks. In addition, the position Manages performance improvement activities directed toward the achievement of hospital goals.


Minimum Job Qualifications

Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree - medical technology, nursing, or other healthcare related field. Combination of a two-year degree and Infection Control work experience may be considered as substitute for Bachelor's degree.

Minimum years in field prior to employment: Five (5) years of clinical experience in a laboratory or clinical area with a minimum of three (3) years direct experience in infection control/disease management

Position Responsibilities

  1. Collect, process, and analyze surveillance data to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to decrease morbidity and mortality as well as employee exposures and injuries

  2. Report communicable diseases as required by law

  3. Consult with administration, medical staff, department managers, employees, and patients regarding infection control practices, policies, and procedures, transmission of communicable disease, and reduction of nosocomial infections

  4. Maintain practice in a clinical specialty in infection control as identified by the Director

  5. Develop agendas and presentations for bimonthly Infections Committee meetings; develop policies that reflect changing trends

  6. Lead multidisciplinary collaborative teams to improve preventative practices, identify evidenced based research, and improve patient and institutional outcomes

  7. Develop educational programs to meet the needs of all employees as required by regulatory agencies to keep them informed about current infection control concepts and their specific responsibilities

  8. Maintain infection control plans for both hospitals and update as needed to meet regulatory requirements

  9. Identify methods to meet new public reporting requirements for infection control data as mandated by state and federal agencies

  10. Evaluate hospitalized patients for the presence of nosocomial, infectious or reportable disease using both electronic data and site visits

  11. Review and revise house wide policies to ensure that current practice meets professional and regulatory standards with regards to identification of issues and outbreak control and prevention

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Sound knowledge of epidemiology, sterilization and sanitation, bacteriology, infectious disease and asepsis

  2. Self motivated individual with the ability to work independently

  3. Strong leadership skills

  4. Must be able to relate to others on a professional level

  5. Ability to plan, organize, and consult

  6. Strong aptitude to present information in a sound and concise manner

  7. Strong computer skills
