The incumbent reports directly to the Laboratory Operations Director. The incumbent works cooperatively with management to achieve system objects. In addition, the incumbent works cooperatively with Physicians, Clinics, Nursing and other providers to deliver high quality and cost-effective laboratory services. The incumbent provides leadership and general supervision of functions that directly support the delivery of laboratory services in an integrated system.

  • Has the authority to interview, hire, terminate, promote, train and conduct performance evaluations.

  • Plan work, the day to day activities; assign work and direct functional and technical job performance of team members .

  • Allocate and direct staffing needs to meet patient, unit, and department needs, and collaborate with others to ensure overall staffing needs are met.

  • Manage performance including: setting goals, clarifying job expectations, monitoring performance progress, providing feedback, recognize, developing skills and addressing performance issues related to work and our Commitments using corrective action.

· Meets all accountabilities for the Medical Technologist position. Assures adequate staffing for workload by scheduling staff in the section. Assures that department technologists critically evaluate specimens & correlate results to clinical status of patients. Assures that staff communicate and appropriately document results to clinical personnel. Assures that staff operate, calibrate, conduct performance checks, and maintain lab instruments and equipment with appropriate documentation. Reviews QC, Activity Reports, corrected/exception reports with feedback to staff & OD. Appropriately documents staff performance with Personal Performance Improvement Plan when necessary. Works as needed as bench MT.

· Assures that staff follow LEAN principles, Standard work, laboratory procedures, policies and job guidance sheets. Regularly rounds on dept several times daily to ensure compliance with LEAN processes. Performs LEAN audits and takes appropriate action. Assures that department defined turnaround times are met by working collaboratively with all aspects of the process. Listens to staff input and takes steps to improve processes.

· Assures that staff follow CAP and all regulatory guidelines. Assigns and evaluates proficiency testing. Demonstrates consistent adherence to national patient safety goals. Works with management to assure adequate staffing for workload. Holds staff meetings minimum of one per month assuring staff of all pertinent communication in lieu of manager. Documents staff competency.

· Maintains a professional knowledge base of laboratory science by accumulating the minimum CEUs required per year. Participates in departmental meetings, inservices, & committees (quality assurance, safety, infection control).



Minimum of two years of progressive experience in clinical laboratory science is preferred.


A minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology or a related field is required. Registered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or equivalent as a Medical Lab Tech or Medical Tech within 12 months of hire.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities :

Must possess a good grasp and knowledge base of clinical laboratory science; strong knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and professional standards (CAP); strong quality control background; excellent communication skills and interpersonal skill-set; and good planning and implementation skills. Must demonstrate personal traits of motivation, responsibility, team orientation, and professionalism.

Working Conditions:

Normal laboratory environment. Exposure to chemical and biological hazards. Routine periods of sitting, walking, and standing required.
