Principle Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Clinical Care. Provides comprehensive and high quality respiratory care related interventions in all care settings to all age groups as outlined by current licensure scope of practice. Posses the skills necessary to provide accurate cardiopulmonary assessment and determine patient needs. Demonstrates advanced critical thinking skills and knowledge in difficult, complex and high risk procedures. Provides accurate and complete documentation of all interventions performed.

  2. Competency.Pursues self-professional growth by attending and/or performing continuing education in order to maintain standards and improve patient care skills. Maintains knowledge of current practice, evidence based medicine and changes in the field of respiratory care related to all patient age groups as specified in the Required Competencies section.

  3. Communicator. Promotes professionalism by demonstration of leadership through communication, effective working relationships and fostering mutual respect within the health care team.

  4. Patient Care Assignments. Rotates to all Critical care areas.

  5. Leadership and Professionalism. Serves as a resource person to management, physicians, nursing and staff. Assists in policy and protocol development. Provides education and training to new staff, nurses, physicians, respiratory care students and staff. Demonstrates professionalism when dealing with other team members. Facilitates a collaborative spirit assuring teamwork in the critical care area. Participates in Quality/Practice and Leadership Councils as elected. Follows the Core Values and Service Excellence Standards as established by the organization.


Position Qualifications


  1. Must be a graduate of an AMA approved school for Respiratory Care.

  2. Preferred BS or BA degree.


  1. Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of Nebraska required.

  2. RRT credential by the NBRC required.

  3. BLS, PALS, NRP and ACLS required. Must complete PALS, NRP and ACLS within 6 months of hire.

  4. Certification as a NPS by the NBRC preferred.


  1. Requires technical knowledge and critical thinking skills to assess and provide complex and difficult Respiratory Care interventions.

  2. Must possess a broad and diverse knowledge of departmental policy, current standards of practice, protocols and procedures.

  3. Minimum of two years of clinical practice preferred.

  4. Must possess skills to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, family members and other staff members.
