JOB SUMMARY: Inspect, clean/sterilize, prepare and assemble surgical scopes/instruments and related equipment for use in procedure

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. COMMUNICATION/INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

Demonstrates and facilitates effective departmental and inter-departmental communications.

Consistently responds to departmental and inter-departmental needs in a prompt, accurate, clear, and precise manner (i.e., filling and dispensing requested supplies, instruments, equipment, etc.)

Consistently informs appropriate individuals about problems involving equipment, supplies, scopes, accessories, etc.

Consistently maintains continuity of communications

Demonstrates the ability to effectively and efficiently use the online scope repair/loaner system.

Maintains accurate records of care and maintenance of scopes and scope washers and reports repairs to manager.

  1. COMPETENCY TO PROCESS AND CLEAN SCOPES/INSTRUMENTS

Consistently inspects the integrity of scopes, leak tests, prewashes, flushes, processes.

Assembles scope cleaning supplies with minimal assistance/stores scopes properly.

Consistently processes, checks, and labels scope cycles in a timely, accurate, and legible

manner with minimal assistance.

Changes scope processor filters/solutions as scheduled.

Replaces all items needed to complete scope/processor/washer care and maintenance.

Records requests for supplies/repairs on appropriate form.

Consistently maintains a clean and orderly work area.

  1. COMPETENCY TO PROCESS INSTRUMENTS, SUPPLIES, EQUIPMENT, SETS, TRAY, AND CASE CARTS

Uses care in handling instruments, identifies heat sensitive items, separates delicate items to prevent damage.

Checks the condition of instrument/scope prior to use.

Ensures that appropriate disinfection test strips are used for each disinfection cycle.

Knowledgeable of the basic use of endoscopes and endotherapy devices.

Keeps accurate records of all equipment received and cleaned, scopes and instruments processed.

Follows leak testing and cleaning procedure per manufacturer’s instructions.

Maintains established inventory supplies and notifies manager of supply needs.

Stock supplies in proper order (new supplies to the back, older supplies to the front).

Displays knowledge in identifying all types of scopes/accessories/supplies.

Able to assist in the training of new employees.

  1. COMPETENCY TO MAINTAIN AN ENVIRONMENT THAT SUPPORTS ASEPSIS AND SAFETY

Understands and practices basis aseptic principles.

Understands the importance of precisely following guidelines for scope cleaning and loading scope washer as outlined by policy and procedure.

Demonstrates understanding of basic principles of all types of scope cleaning/disinfection/sterilization methods used at SVI/ECA and operates/maintains scope washers according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Is prompt and loads scope washers in the correct manner.

Checks scope washer gauges at the beginning of the disinfection cycle, and at frequent intervals during the cycle and at the end of the cycle to ensure proper function.

Performs on a daily basis appropriate testing for washers according to manufacturer’s instructions.

Keeps accurate and legible documentation on all scope washing cycles.

Prepares cleaning solution accurately and maintains adequate level of cleaner in washer.

Practices good personal hygiene.

Understands and complies with infection control policies and procedures such as hand washing, containment of infections agents/materials.

Attends in-service programs and complies with general safety guidelines, fire safety rules, hazard communications, emergency codes and procedures.

Uses care in operating all equipment and carts; sinks are cleaned.

Removes and disposes of dirty linen in the appropriate containers between each scope cleaning and at the end of each day.

Participates in Performance Improvement activities as directed by the department manager.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High School diploma, GED or Metropolitan Test or equivalent.

Experience: Working knowledge of scopes, supplies, scope accessories and processing equipment.

Physical Requirements: This job requires, at various times, the following physical activities; climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, carrying, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, talking, and hearing, sometimes exerting in excess of 10-50 pounds of force.

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform daily activities.

The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions, hazards (including electrical currents and exposure to chemicals), and infectious diseases.

Skills: Able to read and comprehend written material of moderate complexity, write with acceptable clarity and make arithmetic computations; demonstrate positive guest relations/communication skills.
