Supervises the daily personnel and functions of all phlebotomy services with guidance from Team Leads and Senior Manager. Position involves oversight of phlebotomy related Quality Management and Education assignments. Responsible for the operational activities of the section to facilitate accuracy and completeness of phlebotomy pending logs, new employee training/competencies, scheduling of staffing, cost efficiency and productivity of phlebotomy team. Continuously interacts and consults with management, other supervisors, and lead personnel. Generates strategies for improving operations through active participation in the continuous quality improvement philosophies.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: ( Other duties may be assigned)

  • Participates in interviews and recommends new hires. Trains, schedules, counsels, evaluates and disciplines staff assigned to areas of responsibility. Completes performance plans & competency evaluations for staff.

  • Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings to disseminate information and receive feedback. Maintains meeting minutes.

  • Develops and maintains systems to ensure appropriate communication of departmental policy/procedure changes to all personnel.

  • Acts as a direct resource person for all phlebotomy related issues and acts as a mentor to employees within the department on all shifts.

  • Maintains a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with peers, clients, and laboratory colleagues.

  • Assists in the formulation and implementation of section goals.

  • Ensures compliance with phlebotomy-related regulatory and accrediting agency standards.

  • Works with appropriate laboratory and nursing staff to resolve and identify opportunities for process improvement. Facilitates process review and implements identified changes.

  • Functions as a liaison between the laboratory and nursing departments regarding specimen collection procedures.

  • Maintains open and positive communication with staff, physicians, manager, director and other ancillary departments.

  • Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Lab Operation Coordinator, Clinical Laboratory Director or Medical laboratory Director.



Education: High school Diploma or GED.

Experience: Five (5) years of phlebotomy experience. One (1) year supervisory preferred.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to hear normal sounds with some background noise. Must be able to see with or without corrective lenses. Must have the ability to perform tasks that deal with weights up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time. Must be able to perform tasks which require walking, stooping, reaching, grasping and feeling.


  • Must demonstrate proficiency in communication and working well with others, demonstrate leadership skills, knowledge of personnel and fiscal management, and must demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Ability to maintain both a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers, patients and visitors and satisfactory job performance despite the stress of a hospital work environment.

  • Considerable knowledge of a clinical laboratory as it applies to collecting and processing specimen.

  • Knowledge of Laboratory Chemical and biological safety.

  • Ability to accept responsibility for the direction, control, or planning of an activity.

  • Ability to interact with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.

  • Ability to perform under stress when confronted with emergency, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations, or situations in which working speed and sustained attention are make-or-break aspects of the job.

  • Ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.

PRIMARY CUSTOMERS : Frequent contact with patients, families of patient, hospital personnel, physicians and co-workers.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Frequent interaction with hospital personnel, physicians and coworkers.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Laboratory Coordinator.
