Summary/Objective

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform a full range of administrative, educational and clinical duties with all levels of perioperative staff as needed. The Clinical Educatorof Perioperative Servicesis responsible for developing an educational and competency plan to elevatethe clinical competency of the Perioperative RNs (all specialties) and other Perioperative staff(i.e. LPNs, CSTs, STs, PCTs, ClinicalAssistants, Clinical Technicians) to ensure optimalpatient outcomes. The

Clinical Educator will providetrusting, collaborative relationships with staff, peers and physicians to insure orientation and competency in Perioperative Servicesat any campus as directed. Essential Functions

  1. Designs and implements acomprehensive educational plan for system surgical services that includes activities such as orientation, organizedpreceptor role, ORtraining, coordinating students, skill validation, quality improvement initiatives, input into performance evaluations and in-services.

  2. Develops an orientation plan for RNS and Surgical Technologists that are aimed tointroduce new graduates as well as experienced staff members and to familiarize new staff with desired clinicaloutcomes inthe Perioperative Setting.

  3. Develops organized preceptorship program and mentors newly hired RNs and CSTs/STs by scrubbing and circulating with newly hired staff and by providing education specificto the OR and other perioperative areas.

  4. Conducts or arranges for monthly educational sessions on new processes, new equipment, mandatoryyearly education topics, low volume and high risk processes and issues, and others asdeemednecessary.

  5. Educates and monitors staff on meeting core measures, infection prevention, patient safety practices and process improvements that supports organization qualityinitiatives.

  6. Works with management team, service line leaders, anesthesiologists and surgeons to continually refresh educational priorities and to contribute educational strategies to improve staff competency and meet patient and physician needs.

  7. Conducts annualcompetency review and provides input to the DirectorofPerioperative Services on clinical competencyofRNs, CSTs/STs and ancillary staff and recommends focusareas for educational plan.

  8. Implements education andmonitoring plan to maintain AORN, ASPAN, TJC andotherrelevant specialty standards in preparation for accreditation surveysand to comply with patient safety requirements.

  9. Assists with the development of policies and procedures by researching best practices and relevant practice standards for all areas of Perioperative departments.

  10. Serves as a resource to nursing, medicalstaff and other members ofthe health team for clinical issues of perioperative patients and for problem resolution.

  11. Evaluates suggestions for change in practiceand initiates the change process when appropriate.

  12. Promotes Customer Serviceinitiatives to meet missionand values of the organization.

  13. Works as a clinical staff member intheclinical setting of the operating rooms, pre-admissions, or PACU area when assigned.

  14. Promotes CNOR or other specialtycertification and facilitates courses or providesresources to assist staff in achieving certifications.

  15. Participates in committees to facilitate organization communication and that influenceor determine policies

affecting perioperative nursing practice.

  1. Promotes teamwork among all members ofthePerioperative Team.

  2. Promotes the image of nursing throughprofessional and community activities.

  3. Maintains professional growthand development through seminars, workshops, in-services, currentliterature

and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in perioperative services and topromote education and ongoinglearning.

Qualifications

Preferred Education and Experience

Five (5) years experience in Perioperative Services as a Circulator and or scrub with focus on education. Current CNOR or working toward achieving within one (1) year from date of hire. Current BLS. ACLS and PALS preferred within one (1) year of hire.

Required Education and Experience BSN, Current license as a Register Nurse
