Surgical Technician (CST)
Surgical Tech, Full time, CHI Health Missouri Valley, IA
Assists in the nursing care and preparation of surgical patients. Functions as a member of the surgery team in donning gown and gloves, creating and maintaining a sterile field, and handing instruments to the surgeon(s).
Assists the surgical team, as necessary, by handing instruments, holding retractors, cutting sutures, helping the circulating RN count sponges, instruments, and needles, and other duties as they are required.
Prepares the operating room(s) for the appropriate surgical procedures (s). Restocks the OR following surgical cases and cleans as necessary.
Demonstrates understanding of, and basic troubleshooting skills for equipment maintained in the operating room area. Develops a sound knowledge base for the various instruments, their use and location.
Demonstrates understanding of the various sterilization techniques used at St. Mary's Community Hospital. Applies this knowledge by safely and correctly wrapping and sterilizing various surgical instruments.
Performs yearly checks on sterile supply outdates and evaluates need for and implements appropriate re-sterilization procedures for the OR and Central Supply (C.S.R.)
Assists as needed in C.S.R. to include ordering supplies.
Administers oxygen if necessary, under direction of registered nurse and/or physician.
Transports patients to and from the operating room.
Maintains flexibility in the published work schedule in order to accommodate emergencies and changes in the surgeon's schedule.
Assumes place in on-call rotation after proper orientation to the department.
Exhibits proper telephone etiquette. Displays professional standards of conduct when dealing with patients, departments, other facilities, and other health care personnel.
Provides concentrated patient care for patients including the adult, pediatric and newborn patients.
Demonstrates an understanding of the Safe Patient Handling and Movement Policy and follows policy when interacting with patient movement and/or transfers.
Requisitions drugs and medicines from approved source when not available. Performs narcotic count with registered nurse.
While maintaining a sterile field:
Sets up tables, instruments, and supplies required for specific operations.
Assists in preparation and draping of patient and operative area.
Prepares and passes instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies needed in the operative procedure and maintains a correct count.
Assists with the application of plaster casts and dressings.
Assists in the maintenance and care of specimens.
Decontaminates all equipment, instruments, and supplies.
Clean carts, rooms, and changes linens.
Cleans and stocks operating rooms and C.S.R. as required.
Assists in the nursing care of adult, pediatric, and newborn patients.
Assists in the discharging of ambulatory patients.
Assists in wrapping of packs and instruments. Understands the principles of steam sterilization and operates sterilizers effectively.
Completes other duties as assigned.

Hours: Monday-Friday day hours with call
Education and/or Experience:
National Surgical Technologist certification.
Current BCLS certification
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Familiarity with special terminology such as medical terms.
Must have good interpersonal relationship skills.
Able to operate specific equipment and tools, including gastroscopes, colonoscopes and video equipment; arthroscope and video equipment, laparoscope and video equipment; tourniquet, vital sign monitors; defibrillator; cautery machines (bipolar and monopolar); and sterilizers.
