Summary of Purpose

Works under the general supervision of the Cardiopulmonary Director or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involve polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care and education. Performs the duties defined for a polysomnographic technician and may provide oversight of other staff.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:

Collects, analyzes and integrates patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (Physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history), and to determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.

Completes and verifies documentation.

Assists or assumes responsibility of scheduling patients for sleep studies.

Reviews history, medications, physical information, and diagnosis to determine special needs for setting up the sleep study.

Explains pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures to the patient.

Demonstrates ability to educate the patient concerning their sleep procedure, equipment and supplies needed, arrival and dismissal time, early termination of study, clothing for study, medications to be taken, signature of medical consent and insurance forms.

Demonstrates ability to deliver study test results to the patient after final dictation.

Aides the patient in choosing and setting up an appointment with a home care company, based on the patient's needs and insurance requirements.

Demonstrates ability to transfer Sleep Studies to other sites for interpretation.

Willing to be flexible in performing the duties of a Sleep Tech and aiding the cardiopulmonary department

Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments if necessary.

Applies electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.

Performs appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and makes adjustments if necessary.

Performs positive airway pressure (PAP, VPAP) mask fitting.

Follows "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.)

Performs Polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and makes adjustments, if necessary.

Documents routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.

Implements appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.)

Follows "lights on" procedures to verify integrity of collected data and completes the data collection process (repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.)

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

Oversees and performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.

Scores sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.

Scores clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) according to center specific protocols.

Generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.

Complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.

Performs routine and complex equipment care and maintenance.

Evaluates sleep study related equipment and inventory.

Performs CQI monitors for sleep lab.

Responds to study participant's procedural-related inquiries by providing appropriate information.

Demonstrates the ability to analyze complex situations and applies policy.

Complies with the AASM Standards of Conduct.

Verifies and edits personal information such as address, emergency contact, direct deposit, and W4 information online via HR Payroll Connection.

Completes annual education requirements.

Wears identification while on duty.

Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.

Resolves personnel concerns at the departmental level, utilizing the grievance process as required.

Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety and infection control.

Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.

Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the facility.

Attends and participates in Corporate Responsibility education and training. Adheres to the procedures and protocols of the Corporate Responsibility Plan to include reporting, investigation and resolving compliance issues.

Applies the knowledge and skills needed to do the job.

Adheres to attendance policies (evidenced by no written warnings for attendance)

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:

  • Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist or equivalent.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Ability to read and interpret physicians' orders.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients.

  • Ability to perform CPR if necessary. BCLS license required.
