This position contributes to the mission and vision of CHI Health by receiving and preparing patient tissue and cytology specimens which are processed, embedded, cut onto glass slides, stained, cover slipped and reviewed by a pathologist for histopathological diagnosis.

  • Process, decalcify if necessary, embed, cut, stain, and coverslip tissue specimens for microscopic evaluation by the pathologist following established policies and procedures.

  • Prepare and evaluate stains, reagents, and solutions necessary for slide prep following established policies and procedures.

  • Follows LEAN principles and standard work practices. Gives input to improve processes.

  • Perform quality control and preventative maintenance procedures to assure instruments, stains, and procedures are within acceptable standards by taking corrective action if necessary and notifying supervisory personnel of variations.

  • Communicates positively about CHI Health and with all lab staff, nurses, doctors, patients, and clinic staff. Works collaboratively with Histology Supervisor and pathologists. Responds to requests in a timely manner.

  • Participates in all safety, security, and infection control programs that are mandatory, as well as, those required and provided by the department.

  • Demonstrates work practices consistent with CHI Health and department-specific safety, security, and infection control policies.

  • Must have ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse and multi-cultural environment.


Experience :

Required: One year of full time experience in a clinical histopathology laboratory in all of the following areas: fixation, microtomy, processing, staining.

Preferred: Three years of full time experience in a clinical histopathology laboratory in all of the following areas: fixation, microtomy, processing, staining, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry (IHC).

Education/Licensure :

Preferred: Associate or baccalaureate degree with successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program, and/or certification as a Histotechnician, HT or Histotechnologist, HTL by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).

Required: High School diploma and at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry; eligible to sit for HT(ASCP) certification exam.

  • Will consider candidates with high school diploma and ten or more years of experience in all areas of histology in lieu of academic credit/degree and certification.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities :

Fine motor coordination. Good visual acuity including color perception. Good knowledge of basic chemistry. Mobility by walking or in a wheelchair. Ability to learn computer skills. Ability to type up to 25 wpm. Job requires continuous reading skills and verbal communication skills. Job requires frequent written communication skills.

Working Conditions:

Normal laboratory environment. Exposure to chemical and biological hazards. Routine periods of sitting, walking, and standing required.
