Supervisor of Lab Services - Mercy West Lakes Laboratory



Plans, organizes and supervises the daily operations of

Mercy Clinical Laboratory technical sections.


  • Participates in the interview and hiring processfor staff vacancies in the areas of responsibility.

  • Schedules staff to ensure appropriatecoverage. Monitors and adjusts staffingappropriate to the workflow

  • Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings todisseminate information and receive feedback.

  • Develops and maintains orientation materials andcoordinates completion of staff orientation.

  • Completes annual performance evaluations andannual competencies.

  • Performs disciplinary action when indicated.

  • Ensures standard operating policies andprocedures are current and adhere to the Laboratory’s document control system

  • Ensures compliance with the requirements oflaboratory regulatory and accrediting agencies.

  • Evaluates, recommends and coordinates newinstrumentation purchases, staff training, instrument set-up and advancedtroubleshooting.

  • Supports and utilizes LEANprinciples/productivity standards.Contributes to the formation of the vision, policies, standards andculture.

  • Develops and maintains quality managementsystems and performance improvement initiatives appropriate to the areas ofresponsibility.

  • Assists in the formulation and implementation ofsection goals.

  • Maintains an inventory system that ensuresappropriate supply levels.

  • Performs other responsibilities as requested bythe Manager, Clinical Laboratory Director or Medical Laboratory Director.



  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or in Chemistry,Biology or related field with one-year clinical internship in a NationalAccrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited ClinicalLaboratory Science program or approved alternate career path asdesignated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA),required.

  • Registration by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists(ASCP) as a medical technologist (MT) or medical laboratory scientist (MLS) orby the American Medical Technologists (AMT) as a medical technologist,required.

  • Four years of clinical laboratory experiencerequired,

  • For Histocompatability – three ofthe four year’s experience must be related tohistocompatibility/transplant testing.

  • For all other sections – One of thefour year’s experience must be related to the testing in specified laboratorysection. (i.e. Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology, etc.)

  • One (1) year supervisory experience preferred.
