CENTRAL SERVICES TECH
The Surgical Technician is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care delivery to assigned patients. Works closely with and leads other ancillary personnel in the care of patients. Professional practice must be consistent with Mercy philosophy. Provides prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to ill, injured, convalescent, and disabled persons. The Surgical Technician must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
Is held accountable for following the policies and procedures of the department, organization, and CHI. Additionally, the position serves as a role model for ethical behavior and promotes an awareness and understanding of positive ethical and moral principles consistent with the Mission, Vision and Behavior Standards of Mercy Medical Center.
Assists with the nursing care of patients in the OR by performing routine and delegated duties according to the standards of practice and policies of the hospital department.
Inventories and requisitions supplies.
Stocking, replenishing, preparing, and/or selecting supplies and equipment for storage or use during surgical procedures.
Perform competencies as listed for the OR Competency Checklist.
Maintain aseptic technique at all times. Report breaks in technique to the RN circulator and surgeon. Correct them immediately.
Anticipate the needs of the surgeon regarding instruments and equipment according to technique procedure and special requirements.
Conscientiously maintain correct count of needles, sponges, and instruments with the RN circulator.
Alert to identifying emergency situations and use sound judgment in instituting established procedures.
Follow correct procedures for gowning and open and closed gloving.
Organize the straddle/mayo table with instruments, supplies, and equipment according to the surgical procedure before the surgeon enters the room. Maintain an orderly instrument table.
Demonstrate a proficiency in surgical draping according to physician preferences and aseptic guidelines.
Demonstrates competency and understanding of local anesthetics and all solutions used during the procedure that have been placed in the sterile field.
Care for and properly handle cultures and specimens.
Properly dispose of all sharps and blades.
Use correct PPE, clean instruments for resterilization.
Check all supplies for outdates to assure no unsterile supplies are used.
Willingly and thoroughly restock the operating room to predetermined par levels.
Exercise stewardship by dealing responsibly with hospital resources at all times.
Current Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) registration from the North Dakota Board of Nursing
American Heart Association Basic Life Support (CPR)
Graduate of a Surgical Technology program
None required, 1 year preferred
